The one thing I haven't done yet is apply any new Mac OS X updates, but as soon as I do I will try to remember to update this article. I even rebooted the system to make sure it was okay, and everything restarted fine. Warning: I don't know if this is always safe to do, but it worked fine on my Mac OS X 10.5 system.

I normally work on a relatively old MacBook Pro (one of the earliest Intel models) that has only 80 GB of disk space, and here lately, as I've gotten more and more into images, audio, and video, that disk space has been disappearing very rapidly. This is actually the point where almost all your available disk space has been claimed by these HUGE image files. Go on creating new HUGE images, until you see a message similar to “cp: Untitled4.dmg: No space left on device”. Once the image is created, go to your terminal that you had opened, and copy the image to another image. Create images as shown here, but keep the image size to 19000 MB which is close to 19 GB. There are a few write ups on this topic on the internet, they say the same thing. So now how do you get rid of that pesky “Purgeable” disk space ? Please read on. In this particular case, there is close to 72GB of purgeable disk space available on my disk. So now we know where the files really went (and no spooky things, duh, we all knew that, didn’t we). What I found is that Disk Utility shows a few things and hides a few things as well in plain sight. that’s when my engineering senses tingled, there must be an absolutely good reason for the Mac to behave the way it behaved. started to feel no more lonely while staying home alone. My hair on the body started to rise, I started to see and hear things. 94% !!! So where did all those files that I deleted go ? What happened to the disk space. I estimated that I cleaned up around 10GB of files, but “df -m” continued to show me the same damn number. One of those days, when I was running out of disk space, again, (Mac Disk Utility and “df -m” showing 94% usage), I decided to delete some of the bigger files. Most of the times, I would execute “df -m” and the space available is the one which includes purgeable disk space (which I did not know at that time), so I would mistakenly think that I “really” had used up all the space that was available on my disk. I often find myself running out of disk space on a Mac.
